7-Day Casablanca to Marrakech via Chefchaouen & Fes

Depending on your arrival time, your driver will typically suggest a stop at the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world and one of the very few in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors, perched dramatically over the Atlantic with a 210-metre minaret, completed in 1993 and showcasing extraordinary hand-cut zellige tilework and carved cedar. From here you are transferred to your riad or hotel to check in and rest. After breakfast, we drive north along the Atlantic coast to Rabat, Morocco's political capital and one of its four Imperial Cities, a journey of about an hour. We spend a couple of hours exploring the Kasbah des Oudayas, a 12th-century fortified citadel of blue-and-white lanes and tranquil Andalusian Gardens overlooking the mouth of the Bou Regreg River, and the Hassan Tower, the unfinished minaret of what was intended to be the world's largest mosque, standing alongside the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, guarded around the clock by the Royal Guard in ceremonial dress. After lunch near the medina (independently), we continue north into the Rif Mountains, where pine forest and terraced Berber villages gradually replace the coastal plains, arriving in Chefchaouen in the late afternoon, in time for the celebrated golden-hour light on its blue-washed walls, considered the best time to photograph the town. Founded in 1471 as a small defensive fortress, Chefchaouen later became a refuge for Muslim and Jewish families fleeing the Spanish Reconquista, which explains its distinctly Andalusian character. After checking into your riad within the medina, the evening is yours to wander the impossibly photogenic blue alleyways at your own pace and enjoy dinner on a rooftop terrace overlooking the surrounding mountains.

This morning is dedicated entirely to Chefchaouen, with no early departure — this remarkable town rewards unhurried time. Your guide leads you through the upper medina, past Plaza Uta el-Hammam and the 15th-century Kasbah fortress with its small museum and garden, before free time to wander the labyrinth of blue stairways and doorways independently, a favourite pastime of photographers from around the world, and an excellent opportunity to pick up handwoven wool garments, local textiles, or the region's distinctive soft goat's cheese. Around midday, we begin the journey south toward Fes, Morocco's spiritual and cultural capital. The route descends out of the Rif Mountains through changing scenery — cork oak forests give way to olive groves and open agricultural plains. We arrive in Fes in the late afternoon. Founded in the 9th century, Fes el-Bali is the largest car-free urban area in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, containing over 9,000 narrow alleyways. Rather than diving straight into the medina today, we recommend checking into your riad, resting briefly, and taking an easy introductory walk before tomorrow's full day of exploration. Fes is widely regarded as Morocco's culinary capital, and dinner tonight is an excellent chance to try a refined Fassi tagine.

Today is dedicated entirely to Fes, and we recommend an early start, around 9am, to explore before the midday heat and crowds build. Your driver hands you to a licensed local guide (compulsory in Fes, given the medina's notoriously labyrinthine 9,000-plus alleyways), who leads you through Fes el-Bali. We begin at Bab Boujloud, the ornate blue-and-green tiled 'Blue Gate', winding through souks organised by traditional guild — metalworkers, weavers, leatherworkers, and spice merchants with pyramids of saffron and cumin. A highlight of the morning is the Chouara Tannery, one of the oldest in the world, where hides are still dyed by hand in stone vats using methods essentially unchanged since the 11th century — you will be offered fresh mint to hold against the strong smell. We view the exterior of the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University, founded in 859 AD and recognised as the oldest continuously operating educational institution in the world, and visit the Bou Inania Madrasa, celebrated for its intricate cedar carving. Your driver will typically stop around midday at a roadside restaurant for lunch, and may suggest a short break at a scenic viewpoint over the Atlas foothills if timing allows. This is also a good opportunity to ask your driver about the contrasts between the Morocco you've seen so far — Rabat's coastal formality, Chefchaouen's mountain calm, and Fes's dense medieval intensity — and what awaits in Marrakech, a city with a fundamentally different character and energy. This morning our driver hands you to a local guide for a full day exploring the 'Red City', beginning early at the Bahia Palace, a 19th-century masterpiece with elaborately carved cedar ceilings and a series of tranquil courtyards, followed by the Saadian Tombs, a royal necropolis dating to the late 16th century that lay sealed and forgotten for nearly 300 years until rediscovered in 1917, renowned for its Italian Carrara marble and gold-leaf detailing. We view the Koutoubia Mosque, Marrakech's largest and most recognisable landmark, whose 77-metre minaret inspired the Giralda in Seville, from its surrounding gardens. Around midday, we visit the Jardin Majorelle, a stunning botanical garden created by French painter Jacques Majorelle in the 1920s and later restored by fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, celebrated for its vivid cobalt-blue buildings and exotic plant collection.
